Shallow Well Drilling Project
Turner Island Water District is pleased to announce the completion of the Shallow Well Drilling project made possible by a Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA) Implementation Grant from the California Department of Water Resources. SGMA requires local Groundwater Sustainability Agencies (GSAs) to adopt and implement plans to achieve sustainable management of local groundwater resources. Turner Island Water District GSA #1 is one of three GSAs in the Merced Subbasin.
Through this project, the District constructed two new shallow irrigation wells to replace an existing deeper well. By screening the shallow wells to withdraw water from above the Corcoran Clay layer, the project will help minimize subsidence impacts and promote stabilization of groundwater levels. Addressing subsidence is important to prevent damage to infrastructure, protect public safety, and support future groundwater recharge.
